Costumes for Women
Are there general guidelines the fashion industry must follow when designing costumes for women? At this level designers don’t come up with costumes and then manufacture them for mass production. Generally, a high profile client will contact them and describe the look they are envisioning. It is then the designer’s job to take what the client is telling them and translate it into the design of their work. For example, six months ago one client in particular came to one of our designers and wanted a costume for a Halloween ball coming up in two months from the time the call came in. This may seem like plenty of time, but in the industry it is next to nothing. All of the materials need to be imported from all over the world. Sometimes the cost of shipping can far exceed what many people make at their job’s in six months. This client in particular wanted a genuine fish costume. She gave specific instructions about how the fins should look in different lighting and how the eyes should move when her eyes move. It was a great first major project for this particular designer and she pulled it off exceptionally well. It was the start of a very rewarding career.
